ENKEL BOKS RJ45 is a complete interface system that combines high functionality with simplified cabling. With one UTP cable (TIA/EIA-568B) from the access controller to the box and a separate power cable, the solution gives a more efficient and cost-saving installation without compromising performance. Using decentralised power supply also removes limitations linked to cable distance, which gives greater freedom and flexibility in the installation. Power can be looped through from door to door for a further reduction in materials and time. The solution has been developed with regard to the requirements of TEK17 (the Norwegian building regulations) for doors and escape routes (including §11-13, §11-14 and §12-13), including fire override and correct configuration of the lock on an escape route.
Main features and benefits
- All signals from the access controller are carried in an RJ45 wiring harness (T568B) and used as control signals for the built-in relays in ENKEL BOKS RJ45. This includes, among other things:
- Relay for fire alarm control
- Relay for night lock (NC)
- Relay for main lock control — a specialised relay with a capacity of 8 A is used here, which ensures reliable operation of locks. This relay is designed for long life, with an expected operating life of up to 25 years.
- A dedicated relay for the elbow switch input signal, which allows the elbow switch to be used at the same time both as a REX control signal for access control and as a signal for automatic door opening (AUTO).
- Independent voltage levels for control and lock (e.g. 12 V control / 24 V lock – or the reverse) via a universal relay coil 10–35 V and a separate lock voltage.
- Reader support: OSDP (RS-485) and Wiegand can be connected directly via the box for a stable and flexible connection.
- Decentralised power supply with a separate cable of up to 2×1.5 mm², which can be looped from door to door for easier installation and lower costs.
- Simplified cable handling and standardised termination (TIA/EIA-568B) give faster commissioning and fewer wiring errors.
- Test and status indicators on the circuit board for quick verification during installation, and a tamper input for safe operation.
- Robust design: up to 5 A on the copper tracks of the circuit board (depends on load and terminal type) for reliable operation of door locks and actuators.
Note: RJ45 is used here as a multi-conductor interface (not Ethernet).
Communication and connection
- Compatible with: Linjator 120140 / 120103
- Dimensions: 104 × 90 × 21 mm
- Signal cable: UTP Cat 6, TIA/EIA-568B (type B) from the ACS controller to ENKEL BOKS RJ45
- Power cable: up to 2×1.5 mm² (separate from the UTP), can be looped (loop-through)
- Operating voltage: 10–35 V DC, quiescent current ≈ 70 mA
- Maximum calculated current on the copper tracks of the circuit board: up to 5 A
- I/O: 32 pluggable screw terminals + RJ45 PCB connector (female)
- Independent levels for control and lock (e.g. 12 V control / 24 V lock) via relays with a universal coil 10–35 V
- FIRE input (dry contact/24 V) with application priority over night/standard
- DIP jumpers for local configuration
Signals from the ACS
- Control signal from the ACS: 10–35 V
- Reader interface: OSDP (RS-485) and Wiegand
- Fire input (control)
- KAC (green break-glass emergency release at the door) and tamper
- Door status (magnet/microswitch)
- Main lock control NO/NC 12–24 V
The lock type is selected by the wiring: fail-safe lock (unlocked without power) on the NC output, fail-secure lock (locked without power) on the NO output – see the wiring diagram. On doors on an escape route, the lock must be fail-safe. - REX / elbow switch (outside/inside)
Door components
- Hold-open magnet (electromagnet) to hold the door open – power supply
- Night lock – power supply/control
- Automatic door operator (AUTO) – control
- Elbow switch internal/external – power supply/control (mounted 0.8–1.2 m above the floor and outside the swing area of the door leaf)
- REX button – signal (mounted outside the swing area of the door leaf)
- KAC (emergency release) – signal/control
- Door magnetic contact / microswitch – signal
- Main lock NO/NC 12–24 V – power supply/control
Power supply
Constant (always active):
- Night lock 12–24 V (not on an escape door; there the night lock is fire-controlled and disconnected on FIRE)
- Backlighting 12–24 V for readers, KAC and elbow switch (max. 300 mA in total)
Fire-controlled (overrides all modes):
- The hold-open magnet is disconnected on FIRE
- Night lock 12–24 V is deactivated/disconnected on an escape route (can be wired via +V HOLD MAGNET)
- Main lock 12–24 V is disconnected for fail-safe opening on an escape route
- FIRE overrides the lock on an escape route: power is disconnected for fail-safe opening; night is overridden
Functional operating modes
Standard mode — door locked:
- Reader: access granted → the door unlocks → automatic opening, if applicable
- Press REX → the door unlocks → manual opening
- Elbow switch (secure side) → automatic opening
- Manual opening without access → intrusion alarm (does not prevent exit on an escape route)
- The night lock is deactivated automatically at each activation of the main lock
Door unlocked:
- Manual opening possible
- Elbow switch → automatic opening
- Night lock deactivated
FIRE evacuation mode — escape door (inside and outside):
- Door unlocked (fail-safe)
- Hold-open magnet released
- Night lock overridden/deactivated
- Elbow switches active on both sides
- Manual opening possible
(Re-entry must be possible — no “electronic dead end”)
Technical note: To meet TEK17, the lock on an escape route must be fail-safe (wired to the NC output).
Safety and reliability
- Short-circuit protection: 300 mA fuses for external reader / elbow switch (isolated from the main lock voltage); 1.0 A fuses on the main power supply to the lock
- Tamper monitoring: switch/signal on unauthorised opening of the box
Installation and operation
- Mount the box on the inside (secure side) of the door, protected against mechanical damage
- Fix to a wall or suitable surface
- Connect to the ACS controller with UTP Cat 6, TIA/EIA-568B (type B)
- Connect 10–35 V DC power (separate cable of up to 2×1.5 mm²; can be looped on to the next door)
- Set the DIP switches/jumpers according to the requirements of the site. On doors on an escape route, the lock must be wired as fail-safe (NC output).
- Connect the necessary door signals/actuators to the box
- Test all signals in test mode
- Close the box and carry out a final test
